What Size Bedroom Do You Need for a King Bed? Room by Room, Planner-Checked

A king fits a 10×11 bedroom on its own with 24 in walkways, and an 11×12 with a desk and dresser. Every room from 9×10 to 12×12 tested, plus the math for yours.

THE SHORT ANSWER

A king bed needs a bedroom at least 10×11 feet to fit on its own with walkways on both sides: the headboard goes on the 11-foot wall, leaving 26 inches each side. Add a dresser and a 48-inch desk and the smallest room that works is 11×12. In a 10×10, a king fits only with one side pushed against a wall.

King bed size, and the frame to plan with

A king mattress is 76 by 80 inches, the widest standard size. A California king is narrower and longer, 72 by 84 (Sleep Foundation). The frame adds a few inches, so we plan king layouts with an 80×84-inch frame, as in all our bedroom guides.

Which rooms fit a king

We solved every bedroom size in our layout guides with an 80×84 king frame, a 30-inch door, 24-inch walkways and both sides of the bed open:

The jump from 10×10 to 10×11 is the one that matters. Centered on a 10-foot wall, an 80-inch king frame leaves 20 inches each side, under the 24-inch minimum. On an 11-foot wall it leaves 26. At 11×12 there’s room for a desk and a dresser as well, with 26 inches beside the bed; at 12×12, 32.

Work it out for your room

For a room size not in the table, add the bed and the space around it:

  • Headboard wall: 80-inch frame + 24 inches each side = 128 inches (10 feet 8 inches). With roomier 30-inch paths, 140 inches.
  • The other direction: 84-inch frame + 24 inches at the foot = 108 inches (9 feet), before any dresser or desk. A dresser past the foot of the bed needs its own depth plus 34 inches to open it.
  • Doors and closets: a door swinging into a walkway, or a closet that needs room to open, can rule out a room that passes the math. The planner checks both.

Those numbers are the bare minimum for walking around the bed. Our layouts keep 34 inches in front of a dresser, enough to pull a drawer all the way out and stand at it, and nightstands add to the headboard wall: a king with two 22-inch nightstands, each 4 inches from the bed, takes 132 inches. Our nightstand dimensions guide has narrower ones.

King, queen or California king?

In a 10×10, a queen fits where a king doesn’t: its 64-inch frame leaves 28 inches each side on a 10-foot wall. A California king is 4 inches narrower than a king, which helps on a tight headboard wall, but 4 inches longer, which costs the same at the foot. Our full vs queen guide compares the smaller sizes room by room.
