A queen mattress is 60 in wide and 80 in long, or 5 ft by 6 ft 8 in. Every mattress maker and size chart we checked uses that size. The bed frame adds about 1 to 6 in each way, depending on its rails and headboard. With 24 in of floor on both sides and past the foot, a queen needs a room at least 9 ft 4 in wide on the headboard wall: a 10×10 is the smallest whole-foot room that fits it.

The queen is the size most couples pick, and it’s narrower than it sounds: split between two people, it gives each 30 in, 8 in less than a twin mattress gives one sleeper. One person gets the full 60 in, room to turn over with a dog or a child alongside.
How much bigger is a queen bed frame?
The frame is what takes up your floor, and it’s always a little bigger than the mattress. Sleep Foundation puts a typical queen frame at 62 to 65 in wide and 82 to 85 in long, about 2 to 5 in over the mattress. Three real queen frames, measured outside by their makers:
| Frame | Outside, W × L | Over the mattress |
|---|---|---|
| Zinus Allen (wood platform) | 60.7 × 82.1 in | about 1 in wider, 2 in longer |
| Zinus Dachelle (upholstered) | 62.8 × 84.4 in | about 3 in wider, 4 in longer |
| IKEA MALM (headboard and footboard) | 66⅛ × 83⅛ in | 6⅛ in wider, 3⅛ in longer |

How much room a queen bed needs
Enter your room’s two walls. The check centers a queen on the headboard wall and looks for 24 in on both sides and past the foot, the planner’s standard setting.
24 in beside the bed and past its foot, the planner’s standard setting.
The headboard wall needs 64 + 24 + 24 = 112 in (9 ft 4 in), and the room needs 109 in from that wall to the one opposite. A 9-foot room falls short both ways; a 10×10 fits a queen, a 10×11 adds a dresser and a 10×12 a desk as well. The room size for a queen bed guide has the plans.
Will a queen mattress measure exactly 60 × 80?
Close, but often not to the inch. The size name is nominal: Serta lists its queen as 60 × 79.5 in, and IKEA’s MALM frame takes a 59⅞ × 79½ in mattress. Queen frames and sheets are made for the nominal size, so half an inch either way doesn’t matter. Thickness varies far more, from 8 to 14 in, so check a fitted sheet’s pocket depth against your mattress.
